Creative Writing Classes in Georgia

Many people dream of becoming a novelist, short story writer or poet. They strive to come up with creative ideas, but sometimes they simply do not know where to start. For those that have trouble getting their creative juices flowing or have no idea how to begin the process, a writing course can be helpful. These courses bring the writer into a community that can inspire ideas and improve writing style and craft.
  1. Emory College

    • Emory College, located in Atlanta, Georgia, offers several creative writing classes that do not require full-time enrollment. The classes are part of the Evening with Emory program for continuing education. Writing courses include: A Novel Experience, which gives an overview of the novel-writing process, Writing for Children and Teens, which focuses on children's fiction and gives advice on marketing a finished novel as well as various creative writing courses. These courses can take anywhere from one to eight sessions to complete, and can cost from $160 to $400 as of March 2010.

    Margaret Mitchell House

    • The Margaret Mitchell House is a literary center located in Atlanta, Georgia. The house is where author Margaret Mitchell once lived and is where she wrote "Gone with the Wind." Aside from hosting guided tours of the house, the Literary Center also conducts annual creative writing courses for both adults and children. These courses are led by award-winning authors and concentrate on diverse topics, from poetry to creative non-fiction.

    Agnes Scott College

    • Agnes Scott College, located in Decatur, offers a bachelor's degree in Creative Writing. Coursework includes Perspectives on Literature that offers a foundation for the student's exploration of the writing craft. Students attend workshops, along with classroom instruction, and ultimately present a public reading of their work. Upon graduation, the student will have amassed a sizable body of creative work, including a poetry chapbook, a novelette and a screenplay.

    • Of course the creative writing degree programs in Georgia are not just limited to the University of Georgia. There are plenty of other schools at which prospective students can work to get a degree, such as Agness Scott College, which offers a bachelor's degree in Creative Writing. It's up to the student to decide which path is correct for her, or if undertaking a degree program is right at all.
