Programs to Help Mothers Go Back to School

College isn't just for kids anymore. Looking around a typical college classroom, it's not usual to see a few older faces in the crowd. With the generous help of various corporations, charitable companies and private donors, finding funding for school as an older, or, "non-traditional" student has gotten much easier. Whether you never went to college, or started your family before you could finish your degree, there are programs to help you get back into school.
  1. The Patsy Takemoto Mink Foundation Scholarship

    • The Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation Scholarship is a grant offered to women re-entering college. To qualify, you must be a mother, demonstrate financial need, must be enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university and be pursuing your first associate's, vocational or bachelor's degree. The award of up to $2,000 is given to 10 women each year.

    Jeannette Rankin Women's Scholarship

    • The Jeannette Rankin Women's Foundation is dedicated to ending poverty by aiding non-traditional students complete their degrees. This scholarship is offered by the foundation to women age 35 and older. To qualify, candidates must be pursuing their first associate's, vocational or bachelor's degree and be financially needy. Candidates also must write an essay outlining their educational and professional goals, a clear plan to achieve said goals and any difficulties they have conquered. The scholarship amount varies based on the individual needs of the applicant, but it tends to be between $1,000 and $5,000.

    The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship

    • The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund helps the impoverished population of Arkansas. The fund encourages single parents living in the state to complete their degrees. To qualify, you must be a single parent (mother or father), live in Arkansas, be low income and must be pursuing your first associate's, vocational or bachelor's degree. The award amount is between $1,000 and $5,000.

    Possible Woman Foundation International Scholarship

    • The goal of the Possible Woman Foundation is to give women a second chance to earn a degree. The selection committee looks for unique, special woman who are financially needy, non-traditional and visionary. Candidates must demonstrate thoughtful and realistic career and education goals and explain any hardships they've faced. The award amount varies, but ranges from $1,000 to $5,000; more than $100,000 has been given out since 2001.
