The Construction Estimating Institute, founded in 1982, offers two estimating courses. The first, sitework estimating, is designed for either new or experienced estimators. During this course, you'll learn how to take required quantities from blueprints, compensate for material swell and shrink, hire appropriate employees and calculate the time to complete the job. The course consists of estimating earthwork construction, estimating underground utilities and estimating roadwork and paving. You may sign up for all three or just take one of the sections. The second group of building estimating courses includes six specific areas of construction: estimating commercial buildings, estimating residential buildings, estimating concrete costs, estimating carpentry construction, estimating masonry costs and estimating trims and finishes.

The New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies offers a certificate program in construction cost estimating. The program is designed for estimators in construction or in real estate development. During the program, you'll take three required classes---fundamentals of construction estimating, fundamentals of construction documents and advanced construction documents---and then choose one elective. These include estimating for interior construction and estimating for mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. With the certificate, you'll be qualified to read and understand construction engineering drawings, follow estimating procedures in order to estimate and finalize a bid for a construction project, create a budget and deal with bond and insurance issues.

The Construction & Industrial Workforce Development Center, an affiliate of the Inland Northwest AGC Education Center, offers an online construction estimating certification program that will prepare you for a job in construction estimating and bidding. To successfully complete the program, you must pass five of the offered classes within two years. Classes are also available on an individual basis if you aren't pursuing the certificate. For the certificate, three classes are required: estimating and bidding I and II and construction materials and processes. You then choose two out of three of the following classes: construction blueprint reading, introduction to construction estimating and essential construction math. You can do the last two classes at your own pace. All the courses in the program are endorsed by the American Society of Professional Estimators.
