Becoming a certified crane operator does not require a lot of training when compared to other heavy equipment operators. Many construction-crane training schools offer training classes that are offered over a three-day to two-week period. In addition, the requirements to become a crane operator are minimal and include being at least 18 years old, having a high school diploma or GED, and being able to pass a physical exam. Many courses include exam preparation to become certified to National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators, or NCCCO, standards. Crane operators can look forward to a good income, earning from $20 to $40 per hour as of February 2011 depending on experience and skill level.
