Adult Literacy Programs in California

Adults in California who have poor reading skills or didn't learn to read as children can benefit from many literacy programs throughout the state. Public and private organizations hire volunteers to teach people reading and comprehension on a one-to-one basis or in a classroom. Improved literacy can help people get better jobs and achieve a better quality of life.
  1. California Library Literacy Services

    • The California State Library coordinates adult literacy programs in more than 800 local public libraries. This state-funded program helps English-speaking individuals age 16 or older learn to read or improve their literacy skills. Local libraries hire and train tutors to teach students individually or in small groups. Using a process called "Roles and Goals," tutors determine what the adult learner needs to accomplish. The volunteer then tailors a custom lesson plan for the individual student. The program also provides other services, including book giveaways and family literacy tutoring.
