The California State Library coordinates adult literacy programs in more than 800 local public libraries. This state-funded program helps English-speaking individuals age 16 or older learn to read or improve their literacy skills. Local libraries hire and train tutors to teach students individually or in small groups. Using a process called "Roles and Goals," tutors determine what the adult learner needs to accomplish. The volunteer then tailors a custom lesson plan for the individual student. The program also provides other services, including book giveaways and family literacy tutoring.
