How to Get My GED in Nevada

To earn a General Educational Development certificate, applicants must successfully pass what is commonly referred to as the "GED test." There are five GED tests: one in mathematics, reading, writing, social science and science. Applicants must pass all five tests in order to receive a GED certificate. There are several ways to prepare for the GED. Eligibility requirements include the applicants being at least 16 years of age and not currently enrolled in, nor having graduated from, high school.

      Locate a GED testing center near you by reviewing the "GED Test Centers in Nevada" list maintained by the Nevada Department of Education or by using the online GED Testing Center locator.

      Locate and enroll in a GED preparation course. Select a course that focuses on test-taking strategies as well as the five test subjects which comprise the GED: reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.

      Take GED practice exams.

      Apply to the board of trustees of the school district in which you live for permission to sit for the GED tests if you are 16 years of age, but less than 17 years of age. Secure and submit to the board of trustees written permission signed by a parent or legal guardian. Meet any other requirements set by the board of trustees.

      Call the GED testing center to inquire about registration requirements and to make a reservation to take the exam. Registration requirements will include a non-refundable registration fee and documentation that you will need to take to the testing center in order to register. As of 2010, the registration fee was $60.

      Go to the GED Testing Center to register for the GED tests. Take the required documentation and the registration fee. If you are 16 years of age but less than 17 years of age, present the school board's permission for you to take the GED tests. If you are 17 years of age but less than 18 years of age, present written permission signed by a parent or legal guardian and verification of withdrawal from school. If you are age 18, present proof of Nevada residency; a government-issued picture ID, such as a driver's license or identification card; and another form of identification.

      Take the GED test at the testing center by completing all five individual tests.

      Wait 10 to 14 days after taking GED tests to get the the results of the tests. You must receive a minimum score of 410 points on each test section with a minimum average score of 450 on the entire test to earn a GED certificate, which will arrive in the mail.
