HCPCS Level II Certification

The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System Level II certification is a medical coding system established under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act that standardized the coding of medical equipment and supplies.

    • The HCPCS Level II codes for medical supplies and equipment include those not covered under HCPCS Level I. HCPCS coding was introduced by the U.S. Congress under HIPAA regulations as the codes are commonly used by both private and public sector health insurers.

    Certification

    • The American Academy of Physician Assistants provides accreditation certification in HCPCS Level II under its Certified Professional Coder -- Outpatient Hospital course. AAPA certification provides evidence of accurate coding of outpatient facility and hospital service codes.

    Exam

    • To become certified in the accurate use of HCPCS Level II medical coding a candidate must successfully complete an exam providing evidence of the correct application of Level II procedure and supply codes.
