Music Colleges in Alabama

A music degree may appeal to students who have both the aptitude and love for making music. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities in the music industry are expected to increase by 15 percent between 2008 and 2018, compared with an 11 percent growth rate for all industries combined. There are numerous music colleges in Alabama.
  1. University of Alabama

    • The University of Alabama is located in Tuscaloosa and offers over 350 majors within the music department. This include undergraduate degrees in performance, composition, history, jazz studies, education, theory and therapy. Students can pursue Bachelor of music degrees, as well as a Bachelor of Arts with a major in music and a Bachelor of Science in education. The graduate program offers a Master of Arts and Doctor of Education in music education. The student in these programs can focus on either instrumental or vocal music.

    University of South Alabama

    • The University of South Alabama offers multiple degree programs for the musically inclined student. These include a Bachelor of Music with a focus on music education, a Bachelor of Fine Arts win a music theater focus, Bachelor of Music with a performance focus, and a Bachelor of Busic with a business focus. A minor in music is also possible. The program requires an audition as part of the application process.

    University of Montevallo

    • The University of Montevallo was the first school in Alabama to receive accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music, in 1931. The program has approximately 3,000 students and offers about 85 majors for undergraduate students. Among these are a Bachelor of Arts, Bchelor of Music or a master's in education with a concentration in music. A minor in music is also possible. The school requires an audition prior to acceptance in any music degree program.

    Auburn

    • Auburn's music department offers several degree programs, including the Bachelor of Arts in music with a focus on performance, and Bachelor of Music Education with options to focus on instrumental, vocal or a combination of these two disciplines. These programs include private instruction, individual performance and participation in ensemble programs.
