Pima Community College in Tucson has developed a CDL truck driver training program that confers certificates in three areas: Class A vehicle driver, professional truck driver and commercial truck driver. The Class A vehicle driver certificate is an 8-credit course with two core classes: basic vehicle operations and commercial driver's license requirements and basic driving maneuvers. This course teaches drivers the basics of vehicle operation and the CDL requirements and is taught only on weekends. The professional truck driver certificate course is a 23-credit program with classes such as basic control, extreme driving conditions, defensive driving, cargo handling, driver challenges and air brake system study. Graduates of this program will have the necessary training to seek jobs as professional truck drivers and over-the-road sole drivers. The commercial driver truck driver certificate is a 16-credit course with classes that include preparation for the commercial driver's license exam, operation of a tractor-trailer, and inspection, operation and safe driving of a tractor-trailer. Graduates will be able to seek work as tractor-trailer drivers and sole drivers.
