How to Get a Second BA Degree at CUNY

A Bachelor of Arts degree can prepare you for entry into a profession, or for graduate study in your field. If your goals change, however, the City University of New York may help you to begin your new journey through its Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies designed for adult, second BA students. As a student in the second BA program, you can create an individualized program that includes the courses you need for your next endeavor.

Instructions

    • 1

Register for, and attend an information session for prospective students in advance of the university's May and November application deadlines for the fall and spring semesters. If you can't attend an information session in person, or have additional questions, contact a program admissions recruiter by phone or by email.

    • 2

Fill out the application to the CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies as a transfer student. Prepare a personal statement, and gather transcripts from all colleges attended. If you received your first undergraduate degree from CUNY, then you do not have to submit undergraduate transcripts.

    • 3

Ask a professor or a supervisor familiar with your potential for academic work to write a letter of recommendation. Write a draft outline of your proposed course of study at CUNY. Submit all application materials to the university by the recommended deadline.

    • 4

Meet with your assigned faculty mentor after you are admitted to the program. Discuss your individualized course of study with your mentor, and have your mentor approve it.

    • 5

Enroll and complete all the classes on your course of study. CUNY may accept up to 90 credits from your first BA degree. You need to complete a minimum of 30 credits in residency at CUNY, and maintain a 2.50 grade point average, in order to earn your second BA.
