Verify your eligibility. Most states require GED diploma candidates to be at least 16 years old and a current state resident. If you're presently enrolled in a high school diploma program, you're ineligible to pursue the GED diploma.
Gather important documentation. Most programs require applicants to provide a birth certificate, Social Security card, proof of residency and a valid government-issued ID during program registration.
Contact an authorized GED educational facility or other official GED testing center, and ask about the steps required for registration. To locate a center in your area, enter your location into the GED locator on the American Council on Education's official website.
Obtain registration information. In most areas, you can request a registration application via mail, online, in person or by phone. After you complete the registration packet and pay all fees, you will receive the date, time and location of the GED exam. Depending on the facility, GED test fees typically range from $20 to $50.
Study for the GED exam. Purchase or borrow GED test preparation booklets from a local bookstore or library. Although it's not required, you can also enroll in GED preparation or Adult Basic Education classes online or at local community colleges at a reduced cost or for free.
Bring your photo ID and any other required paperwork with you on testing day. Take and successfully pass the exam to earn your GED diploma.
