Verify that you meet state requirements to take the tests. Michigan requires test-takers to be 16 years or older and out of regular school programs for at least a year before the test.
Take GED preparation classes. You can takes these online, through correspondence courses, from private tutors or from local school districts. These courses are not required, but will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and improve the skills you will be tested on.
Find a local testing center. Visit the American Council of Education and enter your zip code to locate a GED examination center near you or call the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth at 517-373-1692 for information.
Prepare to pay a fee to take the GED test. Michigan has no set fees, so check with your local center to find out how much you must pay. Local centers may have requirements or processes for signing up for the tests. Find out ahead of time if you have to submit an application or other documents.
Arrive at the testing center with a government-issued photo identification that includes your name, date of birth and signature. This can be a Michigan driver's license, state identification card, valid passport, military identification or current post-secondary education identification. If you are under 18, you also need a copy of a transcript from the last school you attended with your withdrawal date, a note from your parents or guardians, one from school officials and a statement from you explaining why it is in your best interest to take the GED exam.
