Sorority Bonding Ideas

Sororities are a fantastic way to meet like-minded women in a collegiate setting. However, it's often easy for members to feel stranded in a sea of so many busy young women. Sorority bonding activities are an effective way to promote sisterhood and let members know they are an important part of the whole.
  1. Paper Bag Memos

    • It's easy to feel anonymous in a sorority, especially in a chapter with a large number of members. This project combines bonding with crafting and will get every member involved. Each girl will need colored construction paper, scissors, markers, stickers and a small paper lunch sack. Cut the paper into index card-sized pieces. Write a note, memory or nice thought about the other girls in the chapter on one side of a card (one girl per card), and the girl's name (about whom the note is written) on the other side. Decorate your paper bag with your own name, doodles, sorority symbols and stickers. Set the bags out and have each girl add the memo that corresponds with the name on each bag. Let the members take their bags and read the sentiments that their sisters wrote about them; it's the perfect way to cheer up any bad day.

    Sisterhood Outings

    • Depending on a chapter's activities budget, planning an outing can be an activity-based way to bring sisters together. Teamwork activities, such as high ropes courses and rock climbing, are effective options for chapters with large budgets. On a smaller budget, taking members out to paint pottery or go to the local zoo are outings that take about half a day. If your chapter has no activities budget, plan a sporting event for the girls. Sign out some field or court time from the collegiate athletics office and play an all-day tournament; kickball, volleyball, flag football and softball are all solid options.

    Movie Night

    • Getting together to watch movies and catch up offers a casual setting for sorority sisters to escape the daily college grind. Screen movies for a few hours at the sorority house or ask an older member to host at their off-campus home. You can arrange movie nights by theme (Valentine's Day and Christmas are popular options) or by campus schedule (midterm and final exams call for some classic comedies). If possible, provide snacks and drinks for the moviegoers. If your chapter has too many members for one room to accommodate, break up movie nights alphabetically rather than by pledge class. This ensures girls will talk to members outside their normal circle of friends.

    Family Tree

    • If your sorority uses big sisters and little sisters, building a family tree is the perfect excuse to talk to chapter members of all ages. Have the senior members get together with their "families" and talk about their experiences in the sorority. Seniors can talk to younger members about their own big sisters and what they remember about them. See how far back the seniors can remember their "bigs" and "littles," and have them draw out a family tree. Let younger members keep a copy of their tree so they remember their sorority heritage.
