Service Project Ideas for Sororities

Many collegiate women join a philanthropic sorority as a way to give back to their community through service projects and other events. Many national sororities have partnerships with charitable organizations so that every time they participate in a fund-raiser or service project, the money the sorority raises goes directly to its partner charity. Service projects through sororities offer a great way to give back while spending time with your sorority sisters.
  1. Community Events

    • Alpha Xi Delta sorority chapters across the country hold an event called "Walk Now for Autism Speaks." Alpha Xi Delta sorority sisters serve the cause by collecting donations and sponsorships from family and friends, organizing their own local walk and running the event. All sororities could come up with a similar event for their own local communities. Walk/run events are a great idea, but sororities could also set up community Easter egg hunts, spring festivals with games or a pancake breakfast. Sororities could then donate all the proceeds from their event to the charity of their choice.

    Literacy

    • Kappa Kappa Gamma sponsors a day called "Reading is the Key," in which various sorority chapters serve their communities in libraries, schools or community centers by teaching children the importance of reading. Any sorority can participate in this type of service project as a way to give back to its own charity. Bring sorority sisters to a local school to read a story to the students or have sorority sisters baby-sit at a local library for children of low-income families.

    Community Clean-Up

    • Many sororities participate in efforts to clean up the community. This type of community service project benefits the entire campus community. Sorority sisters could meet up at a local park to clean up garbage or lay down mulch. Sororities could also get together and plant flowers and trees on a part of campus that doesn't have many plants. Many states offer Adopt-a-Highway programs. Sororities could adopt a highway and spend time making sure that their area stays clean and is kept up properly.

    Food Service

    • Sorority sisters can visit their local food pantry, donate their time to helping keep a soup kitchen organized and running efficiently or prepare and share a meal with the elderly at a local nursing home. If working on a food pantry, sorority women can engage the rest of the Greek community by asking them to donate one can of food per member. After collecting these cans of food, the women can bring the canned goods to the local food pantry. Participating in a soup kitchen or meal with the elderly is a great way for sisters to bond and spend quality time with one another and the members of their community.
