Story Ideas for College Newspapers

College newspapers are responsible for bringing important campus and community news to students. Story ideas may run the gamut from in-depth investigations regarding campus policies to light pieces on student organizations and issues pertaining to this particular population. When generating story ideas, it is important to keep your audience in mind, so that you know what you are writing is what matters to them.
  1. Profiles of Student Organizations

    • This could be a running feature in your newspaper to give students an idea of what is offered on campus. Depending on your resources, the features could be simple hits on what some of the organizations do and how to join, or you could go more in-depth and offer history, analysis of how effective each organization is and the pros and cons of being a part of each one.

    Student Government Expose

    • Student governments are prevalent on just about every college campus, but if you want something provocative for your college paper, take a look into how effective your student government association (SGA) actually is. Look into financial records, key accomplishments, scandals and other aspects of the organization to give students a glimpse into the inner workings of your school's SGA.

    Community Spotlight

    • College students tend to live in a bubble of sorts, existing on campus and in things pertaining to campus. This limits their knowledge of the community around the college. Each time you publish, do a spotlight on an interesting local restaurant or attraction to give students a clear idea of what the town is like around them. You might even highlight those companies that offer student specials or cater specifically to attendees of your school.

    Administration Q&A

    • Many college students don't know much about the inner workings of the administration on campus. However, since your job is to inform them, request Q&A-style interviews with the college president and members of his staff. Not only is this a great way to introduce students to the administration, but also it gives a voice to the authority on campus and a way to communicate with students.
