After reading the story to the kindergartner, have him retell the story in the proper sequence of events. You can assist by asking, "And what happened next?" if the student falters during the retelling. Using illustrations from the book or still shots from a movie helps the student remember various events. You can display these pictures on an interactive whiteboard where the student can move the pictures around during group instruction time or on index cards during individual instruction.
After reading a story, ask volunteers to help retell the story. Give each volunteer a stick puppet and invite the group to begin the story. Have students use their stick puppet to act out the events as the story progresses. Ask the students to identify the beginning, middle points and the end to help them keep the story events in proper sequence.
Other class members may remember parts that are left out, but ask them not to shout out the forgotten event. They can provide that information in the discussion following the puppet show.
Have the students close their eyes and listen very carefully. Read the story to them. Do not allow the class to discuss the story or ask questions until after the story reading is complete. Give each student a large sheet of paper with four to eight squares. Direct the students to illustrate the story as they remember it. Give them about 10 minutes to complete the task.
Reread the story and have the students follow along with their illustration. Ask the students to make a mental note of what events they need to add to their pictures. Provide a second sheet of paper for that purpose. After the students have added their events, have them cut out each of the squares and put the pictures in order. Staple the pictures together so that the student has her own version of the book.
Pair your kindergarten students and allow each student to choose a favorite book. Have each pair take 15 minutes to share their stories, using the illustrations in the book. Have the students identify the setting, main characters and main events in the story. After each pair has shared its story, have the students form a new pair and repeat the process. During circle time, choose a student to share with the rest of the circle a story he heard from one of his partners.
