Ideas for a College Scavenger Hunt

Universities range in size from a few thousand students to tens of thousands, which sometimes makes it difficult for freshman to feel comfortable joining dorms or classes. A scavenger hunt on a college campus is not only fun; it can also help new and old students alike connect and learn something about the campus.
  1. Mascot

    • Every college has a mascot, and usually a costume to go along with it. One item on a college scavenger hunt list could be “find the college mascot.” Students would have to attend a sports game to see the mascot in action, but could also earn bonus points if they manage to find the mascot costume and wear it. Learning the history of the mascot and the stadium's location is part of this item's fun.

    Statue/Sculpture

    • Most universities have various sculptures throughout the campus. Often these sculptures are of school founders; sometimes student-made sculptures are also scattered about the campus. Rice University in Houston, Texas, for example, has a statue of William Rice in the middle of campus. California State University, Fullerton has sculptures by students in certain quads. Taking photos with these statues could be on a scavenger hunt list, with bonus points for students who are high-fiving or kissing statues. Students will learn a bit of campus history with this list item.

    Take a Bow

    • One reason for a college scavenger hunt may be to help students remember where certain buildings and areas are on campus. One important building for them to know may be the school’s theater, where plays and other performances take place throughout the year. On the hunt, an item on the list could be “Take a bow on center stage,” and students would have to be photographed bowing on stage.

    Textbooks

    • One thing aplenty at colleges is textbooks. Finding one may not seem too difficult a task for a college scavenger hunt. However, there may be a certain textbook for an unpopular class that students must find. Language courses, such as French or Italian, may not be as popular as Spanish, and thus the textbooks are more difficult to find. Students would have to knock on fellow students' dorm doors (which helps them get to know each other) and ask if they’re taking the class.
