How to Handle Stress at Maritime College

Offering multiple degrees and a 100 percent career placement rate, Maritime College can be a gateway to careers in the Coast Guard, the international shipping industry, and even NASA; that is, as long as you can handle the stress. Located on the Throgs Neck Waterfront of New York City, Maritime College uses a 565-foot training ship to provide the tools for a hands-on experience in its curriculum. Just like the ship, the tools for overcoming stress are within the reach of any student, offered free of charge by the college itself.

Find a quiet spot in the college, then take some time to identify just what it is that's bothering you. The Stephen B. Luce Library offers space on campus where students can concentrate and collect their thoughts without distraction. Monitored study areas in the Learning Assistance Center are also available for anyone needing a place to catch up.

Visit the department that can best help your concerns. Maritime's Office of Student Support Services is a big tent under which several groups offer specialized aid. The Learning Assistance Center provides academic support through a group of faculty, professional and peer tutors. Counseling Services provides psychological therapy for students facing personal issues, whether in group sessions with others facing similar issues, or one-on-one with a counselor. Disabled Student Services helps students with disabilities adapt their studies and college environment to the challenges they face. The Office of Student Support can also refer students to workshops in time management and reducing test anxiety. Contact numbers, e-mails and office addresses are provided online through Maritime's website and online Office of Student Support booklet.

Work out your issues, physically. The fitness and weight training centers in Riesenberg Hall are available for any student looking to work up a good sweat on stairmasters, treadmills, cross-trainers and a variety of other exercise machines. The energy that comes with a refreshing workout routine and keeping healthy can be an invigorating defense against feeling run-down and frazzled.
