How to Get an Apartment as a Student

Living in an apartment versus a college dorm can give you the freedom of coming and going as you wish and the privacy of having your own room. Some colleges allow older students, including juniors and seniors, to live off-campus in an apartment of their choice. Finding the right apartment to fit your wants, needs and likes may take some work searching and comparing apartments in the area.

Set apartment criteria. Before looking for an apartment make a list of things you have to have at the apartment and its complex. For example, consider the amenities, such as pool, laundry and exercise room. You may also want to decide if you need the apartment furnished or can you provide your own furniture. Other things to consider when searching for the apartment may include being close to school and monthly rent.

Find the right apartment. To find an apartment you can search through local apartment guides, check campus advertisements or speak with a campus housing representative. When looking at apartments, stop and ask residents you see walking around and ask how they like the complex and management.

Calculate a budget. Make a list of potential expenses and income before moving into an apartment while at college. Potential expenses include rent, utilities and food. Potential income can include your job, parents, grants, scholarships and loans. Compare all expenses to make sure you have enough money for bills and some left over to still enjoy your time at college.

Consider getting a roommate. Depending upon the apartment you find, a roommate can offer the comfort of not living alone and help paying the bills. If you do get a roommate, remember to be courteous and respectful to each other and create a set guidelines and rules for the two of you to follow.

Find a roommate. Campus housing and other social groups at your college may offer a roommate matching service for students. You can also ask friends and classmates if they are looking for an apartment to share or know someone who is.

Understand the lease. Make sure you understand all of the conditions written in the lease, including the length and penalties for breaking it. Some apartments in college towns offer rental agreements based on semesters, however, some may still require you sign the lease for 12 months.
