Medical Schools in BC

The province of British Columbia in Canada offers training in medicine leading to the four year MD degree through the University of British Columbia (UBC). A distributed learning initiative aims to address inequality of services throughout the province. According to the Canadian Osteopathic Association, there is no accredited osteopathic medical training in British Columbia. Naturopathic physicians earning the ND degree in British Columbia do have prescribing rights granted by 2009 legislation but may not perform surgery except minor surgery.
  1. Vancouver Fraser Medical Program

    • This program trains the majority of the 256 annual medical students at the University of British Columbia. Students complete clinical training at Vancouver General Hospital, St. Paul's Hospital and Royal Columbian Hospital, at general hospitals in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. Students complete an innovative integrated clerkship in Chilliwack, B.C.

    Island Medical Program

    • This joint program between the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria trains a small cohort of 32 students on Vancouver Island. Students complete a semester at UBC in Vancouver then finish their four-year degree on Vancouver Island in the capital city, Victoria. Curriculum is identical to that at UBC and students are awarded an MD from UBC. Students in the Island program are exposed to rural, coastal and research opportunities.

    Northern Medical Program

    • A small cohort of 32 students begin at University of British Columbia campus in Vavcouver and for the remainder of their four years are based at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), culminating in the MD degree from UBC. Clinical training occurs at Dr. Donald Rix Northern Health Sciences Centre at UNBC and Prince George Regional Hospital, as well as integrated clerkship programs in Terrace, B.C, Fort St John & Dawson Creek.

    Southern Medical Program

    • The southern medical program will commence training a cohort of 32 students in 2011, with a site at UBC Okanagan. Students at the Southern Medical Program will be exposed to medical practice in rural and interior areas of British Columbia, with clinical sites at Kelowna General Hospital, Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, the Vernon Jubilee Hospital and Penticton Regional Hospital.

    Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine

    • Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in Vancouver accepts 36 students annually to a four-year program in Naturopathic Medicine leading to the ND degree. Students complete 5,000 hours of training in naturopathic medicine, oriental medicine, acupuncture, nutrition, manipulation, electro and hydrotherapy and basic sciences.
