Graduate Forensic Science Programs

Forensic science is a booming career industry, thanks in large part to the popularity of television crime scene investigation (CSI) shows. While the accuracy of the shows may be questionable, they have sparked interest in the field. Students interested in DNA analysis, lab work and other specialized forms of forensics should consider earning a graduate degree in the field to increase their job opportunities.
  1. The George Washington University

    • Located in downtown Washington, D.C., The George Washington University is one of the premier forensic science graduate programs in the country. The program is particularly attractive to students interested in working for the FBI, Department of Defense or other federal agencies. The degree offered by The George Washington University is a master of forensic science degree in one of five concentrations: crime scene investigations, forensic chemistry, forensic molecular biology, forensic toxicology and high technology crime investigation.

    Marshall University

    • Located in Huntington, West Virginia, Marshall University offers a master of science degree in forensic science. Students are required to focus in one of four areas of concentration: DNA analysis, forensic chemistry, computer forensics and crime scene investigation. One of the unique opportunities that Marshall University offers students is access to a fully accredited forensic lab. In addition to providing students with the resources for learning, it also serves as a place where graduate students can serve in part-time scientist roles while completing their degrees.

    Michigan State University

    • Located in East Lansing, Michigan, Michigan State University offers a master of science degree in forensic science. The school is located within the university's department of criminal justice and offers concentrations in three related subjects: forensic chemistry, forensic biology and forensic anthropology. The forensic program at Michigan State provides students with some of the most sophisticated and newest technology in the country. In terms of career prospects, students have a chance to take advantage of the nearby Michigan State Police Forensic Division which is located a short distance from campus.

    University of California-Davis

    • Located in Davis, California, the University of California-Davis Forensic Science Program encourages research initiatives from their students. The school offers a master of science in forensic science in one of two programs: thesis and nonthesis. Although the research aspect of the thesis is strongly preferred, degrees are offered to students who are unable to complete a thesis. Each program offers two concentrations: DNA and criminalistics. The thesis program requires more research than credit completion, while the nonthesis program requires additional credits be earned in courses taken, and it also requires a capstone project and oral examination to earn a degre.
