The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) offers a master of science in forensic science within its Department of Justice Sciences. The degree program is open to students who hold a bachelor's degree in the fields of chemistry, biology or physics, and who have a minimum GPA of 3.0. The program combines both classroom lectures and laboratory experiences to teach students about the theories and practical applications of forensic pathology and forensic toxicology. Students in the program can choose to either complete a thesis or a non-thesis graduate program. Some required courses in the Master of Science in Forensic Science degree program include Criminalistics, Biological Methods in Forensic Science, Evidence and Procedure, and Forensic Drug Analysis.

Another school to offer an accredited master's degree program in forensic science is the University of California at Davis. Students enrolled in the program are exposed to new technologies and innovative practices in the forensic science field. They have the option to either complete a thesis research project to be published in a journal of forensic science, or else complete a non-thesis degree. Many students enrolled in the graduate program elect to specialize in a particular aspect of the field, such as toxicology, DNA analysis, forensic statistics, fire and arson investigation, scene investigation, accident reconstruction and firearms identification.

Michigan State University is located in the state capital, Lansing. The school offers a master's degree program in forensic science through its School of Criminal Justice. The interdisciplinary program is designed to provide students with a basis upon which to build a career in forensic science, and allows students to choose a concentration in forensic chemistry, forensic biology or forensic anthropology.
