Medical Assistant Courses in Florida

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical assisting is one of the country's fastest-growing fields. Many schools offer diploma and degree programs in the field. In Florida, a number of technical schools and medical institutes teach the basic skills required to enter the medical assisting field. Most schools focus on medical office management and health and science courses designed to give students limited medical knowledge.

    • Medvance Institute, formerly Cumberland School of Medical Technology, started in 1970 in Cookeville, Tennessee. The school's initial program focused on medical laboratory technician training. The school has institutional accreditation through the Accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education. Medvance offers its medical assistant training courses at four Florida locations including Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Stuart and West Palm Beach.

    Genesis Vocational Institute

    • Genesis Vocational Institute offers a medical assistant training program along with many other health care training programs. The school's medical assistant training program educates students in many aspects of medical office management including reception, records management, informatics, insurance billing, phlebotomy, collecting biological specimens and performing specialized medical tests. The course schedule includes HIV/AIDS education, health science core fundamentals, career preparation, pharmacology and limited X-ray training.

    Dade Medical College

    • Dade Medical College has four campuses in Florida including Hialeah, Homestead, Hollywood and Miami. The school offers many health care programs such as diagnostic cardiac sonography and medical assisting. The medical assisting diploma program consists of 75 quarter credits and 940 hours, with a duration of 49 weeks. The school's associate of science degree program consists of 99 quarter credits and 1,180 clock hours distributed over 61 weeks.

    • Southwest Florida College offers an associate of science degree in medical assisting. Courses in this degree program include anatomy and physiology, phlebotomy, radiography and clinical course work such as pharmacology. Southwest Florida College offers the medical assistant degree program at its Fort Myers and Tampa locations. The school also offers a medical assistant diploma program at its Fort Myers, Tampa and Port Charlotte campuses.
