Medical Assistant Colleges in Miami, Florida

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the health care industry will add three million new wage and salary jobs between 2006 and 2016. And with so many retirees in South Florida, the demand for medical assistants is especially high in this region. This high demand has led to an increase in medical assistant training programs in and around Miami. Among the skills taught in these programs are medical anatomy, laboratory and diagnostic testing, patient communication and managing patient needs. Graduates of these programs may work in hospitals, clinics, doctor´s offices, nursing homes or home health care agencies.

    • Everest Institute has locations in Hialeah and North Miami that offer certificate programs in medical assisting. Everest's medical assisting curriculum includes hands-on training in patient care, clinical assisting, medical insurance and bookkeeping, laboratory procedures and therapeutic care. Upon completion of the in-class coursework, students participate in a 160-hour externship which enhances their real world experience with medical assisting.

    Florida Career College

    • Florida Career College has three locations in Miami, including one in Hialeah and another in Pembroke Pines. The school also offers two levels of Medical Assisting degrees--a 12-month diploma program and a 21-month associate's degree program. To qualify for entrance into these programs, a high school degree or GED is required. If you do not have one of these, an "Ability to Benefit" exam can be taken instead.

    Miami Dade College

    • Miami Dade College (MDC) has a full medical campus adjacent to Miami's flagship University of Miami Jackson Medical campus near downtown Miami. Every medical resource necessary to train quality medical assistants is right there on or next to the campus. MDC offers a three-semester, one-year certificate program with an option to extend it to two years with a part-time course load. Externships are available each semester to give students hands-on experience throughout the program.

    ATI College of Health

    • ATI offers an Occupational Associate's Degree (OAD) in Medical Assisting and Medical Assisting Technology. Both programs cover medical administration, medical anatomy, laboratory procedures, phlebotomy and first aid with CPR. Graduates from these programs will receive official certification as an American Medical Technologist upon completion of the Registered Medical Assistant exam.
