PJ's College of Cosmetology in Carmel teaches the Pivot Point's scientific method of hair styling, giving students technical and creative instruction regarding cut, color, style and texture. Nail care instruction includes manicure, pedicure and the use of artificial nails. Training in makeup use, waxing and skin care round out PJ's curriculum in general cosmetology. Students may use scholarships and government financial aid to help with costs.
Kaye's Beauty College in Noblesville gives students classroom instruction as well as hands-on training to prepare them to work as beauticians, skin care specialists, nail technicians, color analysts, waxing specialists, makeup artists, spa technicians or beauty salon owners/managers. Kaye's instructors strive to recreate the salon environment as closely as possible to give the most realistic experience to students. Coursework also includes information about working to prevent back injuries common in cosmetology.
To receive an Indiana cosmetology license, applicants must score at least 75 percent on the state exam as well as on a practical exam administered by a cosmetology school. The cosmetology license also requires 1500 hours of education in a cosmetology school. Specialty licenses to work as a esthetician, manicurist, electrologist or instructor are available. PJ's and Kaye's both offer instruction in esthetics, manicuring and instruction.
Cosmetologists and nail technicians in Indiana must obtain 16 hours of continuing education credits every four years to renew their licenses. Ivy Technical Community College offers some such classes, largely focusing on health and legal issues. Classes at Kaye's may also qualify for continuing education credits; guest speakers present courses on concepts like professionalism and hygiene.
