The School of Construction Management at the University of Louisiana at Monroe began in1966, and is certified by the American Council for Construction Education. The focus of the studies is on overseeing construction projects from beginning to end, emphasizing financial and managerial duties, rather than technical aspects. Upon graduation, students receive a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management degree. Students study diverse areas such as logistics and materials management, risk management and construction codes and regulations. Many students work as interns in local or national construction companies either during or after their studies. The school also has an active students' guild that helps students participate in trade organizations, national conventions and business networking opportunities.
Louisiana Tech University at Ruston provides education in technical aspects of the construction business as well as managerial tasks. Emphasis is on heavy construction and highway and underground construction. The Construction Engineering Technology program is housed in two buildings on campus, with its own laboratory facilities. The program concentrates on the practical application of engineering rather than the science behind it. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering Technology degree. Many graduates have gained employment with government agencies, construction companies and manufacturing companies. The school has two student organizations to choose from; the Associated General Contractors of America and the North American Society of Trenchless Technology.
Louisiana Technical College at Alexandria offers three diplomas in carpentry; a technical diploma (TD), a certificate of technical studies (CTS) and a technical competency area (TCA). The programs include instruction in carpentry techniques, the use of hand and power tools, and the repair of wooden structures and framing systems. Emphasis is also on work experience placements. A high school transcript or GED scores are needed for enrollment. The college also offers a college to career transition service, helping students with career counseling and development programs.
Delgado Community College's Technical Division offers a Certificate of Technical Studies in Carpentry and a Technical Diploma in Carpentry. The programs offer courses in many practical aspects of carpentry, as well as blueprint reading, cost estimates and various construction materials. The college has a 43,000-square-foot student center that houses meeting rooms, game rooms and even a ballroom for student use. The Career Services Department helps students with job search skills and developing career strategies.
