Phoenix College offers two programs for dental assisting. Full-time students may earn a certificate in two semesters while part time students may complete the program in four semesters. The associate's in applied science in dental sssisting is a two-year program. Required courses for both programs include emergency medicine, pharmacology, oral pathology and dental assisting, anatomy, histology and embryology. Clinical practice courses include general, pediatric and periodontal dentistry as well as and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Students enrolled in the degree program are also required to take classes such as sociology, psychology, math, humanities and social and behavioral sciences. New classes begin each fall and spring terms. Phoenix College has a dental clinic on campus where students work under the guidance of instructors to perform procedures such as x-rays and fluoride treatments on actual patients.

The Bryman School of Arizona has two dental assistant programs. One program leads to a diploma and the other to an associate of science degree. The degree program puts more emphasis on communication skills. It has the same classes as the diploma program plus and additional seven classes in general education. Curriculum topics include dental health, chair-side assisting skills, and laboratory and office administrative procedures. Students will learn dental radiography's fundamentals in theory and practical application. Through hands-on training, students will be taught what dental instruments and equipment are, how to use them and how to set them up on the dentist's tray. The program also requires students to learn and be certified in CPR. After finishing the program, students will go into an unpaid externship at a dental office of clinic.

Apollo College Phoenix has a dental assistant program designed to train students in administrative, lab and clinical aspects of working in a dental office or clinic. Courses include oral hygiene, chair-side assisting and office techniques. After completing classroom and lab instruction, students do an externship at a dental office or clinic. Completing this course enables students to work as dental assistants as well as office managers.
