Ultrasound Technician Programs Around San Jose, California

Ultrasound technicians work with high frequency sound waves, or ultrasound, to help diagnose medical conditions. Also known as vascular technologists or diagnostic medical sonographers, ultrasound techs use their skills and equipment to look inside the body. These professionals must have formal training for their job. There are several ultrasound technician programs in the Bay Area near San Jose.
  1. Foothill College

    • Foothill College, located in Los Altos Hills, 17 miles from San Jose, offers a diagnostic medical sonography program. Prerequisite classes include human anatomy and physiology, general physics, math, medical terminology and English. Other requirements to enter the program include CPR certification and completion of a two- or four-year allied health program, such as radiologic technology. Students complete 96 core credit hours over six quarters to graduate. Core coursework includes diagnostic medical sonography principles and protocols, vascular sonography, gynecology and obstetrics, and sonography and patient care. Program curriculum also includes 32 hours per week of clinical practice during five of the six quarters. Program graduates receive a certificate of achievement.

    Lincoln University

    • Lincoln University is in Oakland, 43 miles from San Jose. An ultrasound technician certificate program is available which takes 80 weeks for a full-time student to complete. Also available is an associate of science in diagnostic imaging program with concentrations in diagnostic sonography and echocardiography. This is a two-year program which requires prerequisite general education classes in math, science and psychology. Both programs require 71 core degree units to graduate. Core coursework includes physical principles of ultrasound, OB/GYN ultrasound and scanning lab, introduction to echocardiography, ECG and arrhythmias interpretation, and Doppler vascular imaging. Students also work in two clinical externships for a total of 360 hours. Some students may be able to transfer credit for work completed at another educational institution and receive credit for work experience.

    Kaiser Permanente School of Allied Health Sciences

    • Kaiser Permanente School of Allied Health Sciences, 54 miles outside of San Jose in the city of Richmond, offers sonography programs with general and cardiac concentrations. Before being admitted to the program, applicants must have completed an 18- to 24-month accredited program in an allied health field, such as respiratory therapy, or have completed at least 60 credit hours of college coursework. Before starting the sonography program, students must have taken human anatomy and physiology, algebra, written and oral communication, physics and medical terminology. Core classes for the two-year program include patient care and ergonomics, introduction to abdominal and pelvic sonography, medical and legal ethics, pharmacology in echocardiography, and abdominal sonography.
