The International Maritime Academy in Chennai was established in 1998. Students can obtain one of two B.Tech degrees (in Naval Architecture or in Marine Engineering), a 3-year B.Sc degree in Nautical sciences or a 1-year diploma in nautical sciences. Students reside in modern dorms. In addition to the courses, they get extensive hands-on experience in labs pertaining to vessel life.

Navi Mumbai (New Bombay) is home to the reputed training ship Chanakya. Admission to this course is through the very competitive IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) that students have to write after completing their twelfth grade. This is a government-run maritime college that's overseen by the Director General of shipping. After a three-year training, students are awarded a B.Sc degree in Nautical Sciences, which is recognized by the prestigious International Maritime Organization. Courses include practical navigation, voyage planning, maritime law and meteorology.

MERI is the oldest marine engineering institute in India, established in 1947, which was right when the country gained independence. The institute is affiliated to Indian Maritime University, and there is also a branch of the institute in Mumbai. Each graduating student is awarded a degree in Marine Engineering at the completion of four years (8 semesters of training). Admission is through the Joint Entrance Examination, combined with an individual's application to MERI. This college has a very strong placement service, and it also encourages its graduates to acquire an MBA degree.
