Founded in 1976 originally as Apollo College, Carrington College is a private, nonsectarian school with a branch in Phoenix. They offer a certificate program in veterinary assisting available as a 30-week daytime or 38-week evening course of study. Among the required courses are front office management, chemistry, anatomy, animal restraints, math and medical and surgical nursing. Students must complete one externship. Eligible students can receive federal and state loans and grants, veterans benefits and academic scholarships while attending. For struggling students, the college provides tutoring and organizes student study groups. They also offer free employment assistance.

Kaplan College in Phoenix opened as part of the Scottsdale Educational Center in 1972, becoming Kaplan College in 2007. They grant an Associate of Occupational Studies in Veterinary Technology. The program, lasting about two years, carries the accreditation of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Students learn how to care for a variety of animals, including dogs, cats, birds, lab animals, large animals like horses and cows and exotic animals like snakes. A clinical internship is required for graduation. The school participates in federal and state financial aid programs and offers a limited number of institutional scholarships and work study placements. Job placement assistance is available.

Anthem College is a private, nationwide career training college. The Phoenix branch opened in 1982 and specializes in healthcare and veterinary science degrees. The school's veterinary assisting program culminates in an associate of science degree and has the approval of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
