Vocational Schools Near the Baton Rouge Area

Th Baton Rouge area of Louisiana is home to a number of vocational schools. These private and public institutions grant certificates, diplomas and associate degrees, some of which can lead to employment in fields the Louisiana Workforce Commission projected as among the fastest-growing in the state from 2004 to 2014. Among these fast-growing careers are those in early childhood education, healthcare and computer science.

    • Accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education, Capital Area Technical College is a public, two-year institution that serves the Baton Rouge area. The school has a branch location within the Baton Rouge city limits as well as campuses in Jackson, New Roads, Port Allen and Plaquemine. The associate degree and certificate programs offered by the school vary from branch to branch and include air conditioning and refrigeration, automotive technology, care and development of young children, cosmetology, culinary arts, information and communications technology, nursing, machining and welding. Classes are held during the day and evening as well as online. Eligible students can take advantage of federal, state and veterans' financial aid grants, but the school does not participate in federal student loan programs. Job placement assistance is available for all students.

    Medical Training College

    • Founded in August 1992 as a school of massage therapy, Medical Training College took its present name in June 1996 when it was purchased by private investors. The school offers certificate programs in medical-related trades, such as dental assisting, massage therapy, medical office administration and clinical medical assisting. Programs last seven to 12 months with full-time, daytime study. Evening courses are also available for some programs. All students complete a 180 to 240-hour internship prior to graduation. The school is accredited through the Commission on the Council of Occupational Education. Eligible students can receive federal grants and loans as well as privately-funded loans to help offset the cost of tuition. The school's Placement Office helps students develop resumes and prepare and arrange for interviews.

    • Located in Baton Rouge, ITI Technical College is private institution accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges. The school offers associate degrees in office administration, instrumentation and control technology, drafting, process operations, electronics and information technology, as well as a certificate in air conditioning and electric technology. Programs typically require 10 to 22 months of full-time study to complete. The college offers internships in most programs. Federal and state loans and grants and private loans are available for eligible students. All students complete a training course to improve the effectiveness of their job searches, and the school offers placement assistance after graduation.

    Denham Springs Beauty School

    • Denham Springs Beauty College is located in the community of Denham Springs, about 14 miles from Baton Rouge. The college offers a 1,500-hour cosmetology training course, or 11 months when students take courses full-time. The program covers haircutting, styling, coloring and texturizing, makeup application, facials and waxing. A 600-hour course in nail technology is also offered. Graduates from both programs qualify to take the state licensing exams for professional credentialing. The vocational school operates an on-site salon, where students receive hands-on training. Accredited by the Council on Occupational Education, the school participates in federal grant and loan programs and also offers interest-free payment plans.
