The U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance has been operating the State and Local Anti-Terrorist Training Program (SLATT) since 1996. SLATT provides specialized training for local law enforcement officers to aid in the fight against terrorist activities.
The focus of SLATT training is on detecting, deterring and preventing terrorist attacks. The training concentrates on both foreign-inspired and homegrown terrorist groups and organizations.
College courses are available that lead to a bachelor's or master's degree specializing in terrorism and counterterrorism studies. The courses focus on offensive and defensive strategies to deal with terrorist threats. The courses provide a student with an understanding of religious extremists and terrorist methods and techniques.
