Combat Readiness Training

Every branch of the service has its own training programs to develop and maintain combat readiness among its members. The type of combat readiness training varies depending upon the duties of the armed service.
  1. Basic Training

    • The training methods of recruit basic training have changed to improve their combat readiness upon graduation. The Army has moved away from the strict disciplinarian approach that was used by drill instructors in the past. The Army now focuses its training on building confidence and the ability to think under pressure to the new recruits. The recruits also are trained in physical fitness movements that are reflective of actual movements used on the battle field.

    Airman

    • The Air National Guard trains for combat readiness in Savannah, Georgia, at the Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC). Combat readiness training includes practice on bombing ranges and in air-to-air combat. Ground crews receive training in firefighting techniques and emergency procedures.

    Navy

    • The Navy provides combat readiness training to make sure that a ship and its crew are prepared for battle. The Navy conducts training, called the Tailored Ship's Training Availability (TSTA), to improve a ship's war fighting ability. TSTA training guarantees that a ship is ready for battle.
