How to Obtain College Credit Records

College credit records, also known as a college transcript, are used by employers to verify an applicant's credentials. They can also be used to verify that certain degree prerequisites have been met by a graduate school or transfer applicant. In order to get your college credit records, you must have paid any fees and cleared any fines with the institution issuing the credit records. Colleges or universities may refuse to release credit records if degree requirements have not been met or if there is any amount of tuition outstanding. Contact the records office at the institution that issued your degree for an official copy of your college credit records.

Contact the records (sometimes called registrar's) office at the college or university you attended. The records office is usually associated with the school administration office. They will inform you of the required identification and fees. If there are any outstanding fines or tuition amounts that have not been paid, you will be required to pay those first before your transcript can be released.

Complete a transcript request form and provide proper identification. Most schools require a student ID number when accessing student records, but if a great amount of time has passed since the date of attendance or degree completion, a state-issued ID may replace a student ID. The transcript request form may ask for information such as: date of degree completion, name, date of birth, complete address and phone number and email address. In some cases, this form may be completed online. In others, the records request form must be requested over the phone, in person or by mail.

Pay the transcript request fee. Fees for college credit records vary from $5 to $25 depending on the institution issuing the records. Many institutions offer unofficial copies of records that are printed on plain paper without the registrar's seal. Unofficial copies are generally free, but require the student to request the records in person.
