How to Learn Wave Math

Waves are an important part of our lives. First, there are the waves of the ocean, and then there are others all around us that we are less prone to notice. Sound, light and vibrations: These are all waves. Mathematicians have been modeling these waves for decades and have developed mathematical techniques under the name of wave math. Learning wave math is not an easy task but can be done with perseverance.

Instructions

    • 1

Familiarize yourself with the concepts of amplitude, period, wavelength and frequency. These three concepts are essential in the study of waves. Memorize these words' definitions and mathematical calculations.

    • 2

Review basic trigonometric functions. The foundation of wave math is trigonometry. As you learn wave math, you will be using heavily the sine, cosine and tangent functions. Make sure you understand what these functions do and how they are related to triangles and circles.

    • 3

Memorize the formulas for the speed of a wave. The speed of a wave can be calculated in two ways. You only need to know the wavelength, frequency and period of a wave to calculate its speed. One way to calculate the speed is to divide the wavelength by the period. Another way is to multiply the wavelength by the frequency.

    • 4

Learn the hyperbolic functions. These functions are often written as sinh, cosh, and tanh. These functions play an important role in advanced wave math for calculating wave properties such as the phase speed. Try memorizing what functions play roles in each wave property.

    • 5

Test your skill by calculating all of a wave's properties based only on its most basic information. You can find examples of these kinds of problems in texts on wave math.
