GRE Prep Games

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is an exam taken by present and former college students who seek to enter graduate school. The test is a product of Educational Testing Service. It can be taken at any time during the year at testing centers throughout the United States. ETS.org states that thousands of graduate and business schools accept GRE scores. The three components of the general test are Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Analytical Writing. One way to prepare for the GRE is by playing games designed to improve your score.
  1. Study Group Relay

    • Gather fellow graduate student hopefuls to form a study group. Play a relay game with GRE practice questions in both verbal and quantitative reasoning. There should be ten questions in a set with each question written on a small piece of paper. Divide group members into two teams. Instruct team members to line up one person after another. Give the first person in each team a set of questions. The first participants must write down the answer to one of the questions and pass the remaining questions to the next person in the line, who writes the answer to one and so on. The first team to answer all the questions says "done" and the other team must stop where they are. Correct answers are then added up with the team with the most right answers winning the round.

    Game Show Quizzing

    • You only need three people to create a game-show quiz game to practice for the exam. One person needs to serve as the quiz master while the other two are contestants. The quiz master asks questions from a GRE practice test. Each contestant has a bell or other noise-making device. The quiz master will call on the person who "rings" first to answer the question he has just read. The individual then has 30 seconds to give an answer. The contestant may use scratch paper to work out his solution. A correct answer receives one point. The quiz master keeps track of each contestants points until 25 points is reached by one of the contestants at which time the game is ended with that person declared the winner.

    Matching Game

    • Two or more test-takers can use a matching game to help increase their scores on the verbal reasoning section of the GRE. This game focuses on vocabulary skills using a word list generated from a GRE-preparation manual. Each person creates a matching game of words and their definitions by copying a list of words from the manual on one set of flash cards and their definitions on another set. There should be only one word or one definition on each individual card. Each set of words and definitions are mixed up by the writer and given to the other person. Each participant then attempts to match each word to its correct definition. The winner has the most correct answers.

    Online Games

    • You do not need additional people to practice for the GRE when you use computer games to prepare. Some of these games are fee-based but many are free. These games are convenient and can even function as stress relievers. Some of the most popular preparation games are provided by Sheppard Software and Quiz Tree.com.
