PSSA Test Prep Ideas

The Pennsylvania System of School Assessments (PSSA) is a standardized test that all Pennsylvania students are required to take. It covers all the subjects taught in school, including math, language, reading and comprehension, and history. You can help children prepare themselves for the test in a number of different ways.
  1. Online Games

    • Several online sites designed for the PSSA center around student preparation. Many of them include basic study information and some have games your child can play to review all the material that will be covered in the PSSA. These types of games include vocabulary games, math games, reading and comprehension games, as well as writing games. Use your preferred search engine and look for "PSSA interactive prep games" or something similar.

    Workbooks

    • You can purchase workbooks for your child's grade level that will cover the material tested in the PSSA. The workbooks contain a variety of activities from word searches to mathematical equations; some cover just one subject, while others are multi-subject oriented. Workbooks are available at educational shops and online. You can search online and find workbooks for your child's age that are recommended by educators for PSSA prep.

    Homemade Games

    • Make up some fun homemade games to cover the material covered in the PSSA. Use a different game per subject. For example, if you want to use flashcards for vocabulary, you can award a point per correct word and/or definition, and work out a rewards system. Understand what you're trying to accomplish with each game. With vocabulary lessons, the point is to get your child to expand his vocabulary, whereas with mathematical lessons, the point is to get them to understand the mathematical concepts of equations and critical thinking. Devise board games, card games, and games you can play on paper, such as hangman.

    Sample Tests

    • Several resources can be used to obtain past PSSA tests, which you and your child can go through and brush up on the subjects that give him the most trouble. These resources include the school or Internet, and sometimes the library will have a reference book with copies of past PSSA tests in them that you can photocopy.
