SAT Prep Resources

The SAT test is a globally recognized college entrance exam. The majority of colleges and universities use the test in making admissions decisions. Therefore, doing well on this exam is very important for most students. The exam tests students in the areas of reading, writing and math and lasts nearly four hours. If the thought of prepping for such an all-encompassing exam seems impossible, there are many resources available to ensure that you are comfortable with the material to be tested.
  1. Prep Books

    • There are many test prep books available online and in your local bookstore. You can purchase SAT Prep books used and new. The Princeton Review and the CollegeBoard publish various test prep materials, which you can buy directly from their websites. Oftentimes, these books are filled with test-taking strategies, practice tests and provide lots of information about the material you are bound to see on the test, which you should be familiar with before test day.

It's worth noting that these books are usually quite lengthy. If you intend on studying for the SAT using a book, you may want to begin studying months in advance in order to cover the three sections.

    Media Options

    • Consider downloading a daily SAT podcast.

Whether or not you want to prepare for the SAT by listening to a daily podcast or taking an online prep course, there is an option for everyone when it comes to prepping for the SAT using online media. The CollegeBoard (publishers of the SAT test) offers an online prep course. According the The CollegeBoard, "The Official SAT Online Course features interactive lessons, auto essay scoring, and much more. It's personalized, comprehensive, easy to use, and available anytime and anywhere."

    The SAT Practice Test

    • Once you register for the SAT you will be sent a registration packet in the mail that includes a free practice test. The practice test is incredibly helpful in understanding the layout of the test and what sorts of questions and essays you will be accountable for on test day. Practice tests are often available in test prep books, SAT online practice tests, and they can be downloaded and printed online.

    Build a Study Group

    • Study groups can allow you to see areas you need to focus on.

Building a study group of five to ten people will not only help you set aside time to study, it will also help you engage with the material and pay closer attention to what areas you are weakest in. Find classmates who are also taking the test on the same test date and get together a couple of times a week to quiz each other or make flashcards. It's easy to postpone studying by yourself, but it's not so easy to skip a study group you know is counting on you to be there.
