Directions for the SAT

The Scholastic Aptitude Test, or the SAT, is often one of the most dreaded steps in the college acceptance and enrollment process. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most important. While few teenagers can get excited about having to take a test they aren't going to get a grade for, the SAT is an important one. More and more schools require an SAT score for entrance every day, and it can serve as a measure of a student's college readiness.

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll in an SAT prep course. Some schools offer SAT preparatory courses as part of the regular curriculum or before or after the regular school day. If not, you may have to find an SAT prep course at your local community center or city college. Attend the class every time it is held to give yourself the best chance at acing the SAT.

    • 2

Take SAT practice exams. These exams are often administered as part of SAT prep courses. If not, check out an SAT practice book from your local library. Time yourself and take the test as you normally would. Tally up the answers and see what your score is. Looking at your practice scores can help you figure out what subject areas you could stand to improve upon.

    • 3

Visit the College Board website to find the upcoming SAT testing dates and centers near you. Pick a date and location that works for you and register for it. Talk to your guidance counselor about how you may be able to qualify for an SAT fee waiver, so you don't have to pay the fee for the SAT. Depending on the subjects you are testing in, the SAT can cost anywhere from $21 for one subject to $47 for the SAT Reasoning Test.

    • 4

Show up to your testing center at the date and time for which you have registered. You will need the SAT ticket that should have arrived in the mail after you registered for your test. You should also bring two No. 2 pencils with erasers, your photo identification card and a watch to keep track of the time. Calculators are acceptable for math tests, although scratch paper is not allowed.
