Spelling Card Games

Learning to spell correctly is an important part of the learning process while growing up. Correct spelling is vital for homework assignments and tests, and it's just as important in the world outside of school, such as on blogs or in email. Create card games to help yourself and others learn how to spell.
  1. Alpha-Time Spelling

    • Provide each game participant with 10 slips of paper, on which each player should write a spelling word from a list previously decided upon, one word per slip. Have each player mix up the slips on the table or desk in front of them, and when they're done, have them line up the slips in alphabetical order. Allow three to five minutes for each round.

    Alphabet Cards

    • Prepare a set of alphabet cards for each player in the game -- the best may be one of each lower case letter in the alphabet, and one of each letter capitalized, for a total of 52 cards. Scatter the cards in front of each player, and tell them the word you wish them to spell. Each player should find the letters and place them face up in front of them, arranging them to spell the word correctly. Once a player has done so, give him the next word in the game.

    Spelling Concentration

    • Create concentration boards with letters instead of pictures -- five across and five down. Place cards over each letter so players can't immediately see where the letters are. Instead of just matching letter to letter on the board, have your players listen to a word you call out, and find those letters on the board. For instance, you should say the word "cat," and each player should overturn "C" "A" and "T," with partners watching to make sure they don't cheat and turn over more letters than needed for a word.

    Flash Cards

    • Create flash cards for your students to help them learn their spelling vocabulary words. Put words on the back of each card, with a picture of the word on the front. Have the student tell you what the picture is of, then ask him to spell the word out loud to you. If they are uncomfortable spelling out loud, allow them to write the words down on a piece of paper.
