Create a race track on a large piece of poster board (or two pieces taped together) and divide into spaces. Give each student a toy race car, which is placed at the starting line. Divide a list of spelling words by difficulty and assign the words a point value: one point for the easiest, two points for medium difficulty and three points for the hardest. In turn, ask the student which category he wants (easy, medium or hard) and ask him to spell a word from that category. If he gets it correct, he moves his car that many spaces along the track. If he gets it wrong, he remains on the space. The first one to reach the finish line wins.
Have the children sit in a circle or form a line shoulder-to-shoulder. Call out a word from the week's spelling list. The first student in line must call out the first letter in the word, the second student calls out the next letter and so forth until the entire word is spelled out. The student in line after the last letter is called must say the word. The next student then calls out "Sparkle!" and must sit down. If anyone gets a letter wrong, they, too, must sit down. The last student remaining is the winner.
Draw a tic tac toe grid on the chalkboard. Divide the class into two teams; one is the Xs and the other is the Os. A player from the first team comes to the board and is asked to spell a word from that week's spelling list. If she gets it correct, she places an X or an O in the space of her choice on the grid. If she gets it wrong, she simply returns to her seat and the second team has an opportunity to spell the same word. Continue until one team gets tic tac toe and is declared the winner.
Divide the class into two teams and have them stand on opposite sides of the room. Give the first student in line for each team a dry-erase board and marker. Call out the first word to be spelled. The players must spell out the word on the board. They then pass the board to the second player in line who has the option to keep it as is or correct it. When you call time, each team reveals the word. A correctly spelled word is worth one point. The next round starts with the third player in line and the procedure is repeated. The team with the most points at the end of the period is the winner. A variation of the game is to have the first player in line write the just the first letter in the word and pass the board to second player, who must write the second letter in the word and so on, until the word is completed.
