Homemade Spelling Games

Memorizing the words on a spelling list takes repetition and practice. Rather than simply writing out the words over and over, engage your learners in a few spelling games. Students will be motivated to spell the words correctly and have fun challenging themselves to make improvements.
  1. Sparkle

    • Students depend on each other to spell correctly when playing Sparkle.

Students will have fun working through their spelling list while playing this game. The class must line up single file. Call out the first word on the spelling list. The first student in line must say the first letter of the word. The second student says the second letter. Students continue until the word has been spelled. If a student says an incorrect letter, he must go sit down. If the word has been spelled correctly, the next student in line must say "Sparkle" and that student must go sit down. Play continues until there is only one person left standing.

    Peer Tutor Game

    • Peers help each other spell the words correctly.

Individualize spelling lessons with this effective game. Divide the class into partnerships. Each partner must be given the list of words for their partner. One student, designated to start as the tutor, will read the words while the speller writes them down. After having written each word, the speller must orally spell each word from the list. Correctly spelled words are awarded two points. Incorrectly spelled words must be correctly written three times to be awarded one point. After five minutes, players switch roles. The game concludes with points tallied to determine who earned the most points.

    Sink and Spell

    • Graph paper works well for playing Sink and Spell.

Students play this game similar to Battleship but they will hide their spelling words on a grid rather than ships. Give each student a 8.5-by-14 inch sheet of grid paper. Instruct your students to fold the paper in half creating two small grid squares. For both grid squares, the horizontal axis should be labeled with letters and the vertical axis labeled with numbers. Students should write their spelling words, one letter per box, on the top grid square. The bottom grid square is used to track their partner's word placement. Each player will take turns calling out coordinates and marking hit or miss on the bottom grid square. Play continues until one partner has found the location of all her partner's spelling words.

    Inspector Speller

    • Ask your students to correct the misspellings they see on the board.

Write the list of spelling words on the board. Read and discuss the words with the class. When the students are familiar with the spelling words, instruct them to put their heads down on their desks. Erase and change the spelling of one of the words. Make a change that is a common misspelling such as, "reciept" instead of "receipt" or "becuase" instead of "because". Students may raise their heads and see if they can determine which word was changed and how to correct the error.
