GRE Study Games

There are many available games and study tools to help with preparing for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken by high school and college graduates. The standardized test covers a verbal selection with questions on analogies, completions and reading comprehension; a quantitative section with multiple choice questions to test math skills; and two analytical writing essays. Most GRE study games are designed to help with the verbal portion and are centered on the concept of building vocabulary through elaboration.
  1. Word Find

    • Word Find teams study in pairs. One team asks the questions, and the other team replies with corresponding synonyms, antonyms or vocabulary words.

    Vocabulary Bingo

    • Vocabulary bingo allows test takers to have practice with synonyms and antonyms. You can create bingo boards with synonyms and antonyms on them. One person calls out vocabulary words written on cards and players look for and mark off the matching synonym or antonym. Once someone gets five spaces in a row, everyone reviews to be in agreement that they are proper synonyms or antonyms and the game starts over.

    Sentence Completion

    • To prepare for the sentence completion part of the test, partners can make a game out of one person throwing out a word and having the other use it in a sentence. Or one partner can read an incomplete sentence and ask for the missing word.

    Hangman

    • You can play hangman with the GRE vocabulary list. There are online versions specifically for this if you want to forgo the pen and paper method.
