Graduate Programs for Clinical Lab Science

Clinical laboratory science is the study of bodily tissues, including the fluids within the body. Clinical lab science pulls knowledge from several sub specialties such as immunology, microbiology, chemistry and hematology. Several schools across the country offer graduate degree programs in clinical lab science, however the best programs provide students with a rigorous curriculum, are accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and provide additional help to students preparing to take the licensing and certification exams required by the state in which they wish to work.
  1. University of Alabama

    • Ranked among the top medical schools in 2013 in research and primary care by "U.S. News & World Report," The University of Alabama offers students students a fully accredited Master of Science in clinical laboratory science. As part of the intense curriculum, students practice and conduct research in one or more of the 19 hospitals and facilities affiliated with UAB. Students may participate in several of the clubs and organizations to gain further experience in the field. In addition, several scholarships and financial aid options are available to medical students. After graduation, students are eligible to take the necessary exams through the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification.

    University of Texas

    • The University of Texas in Galveston offers three Master of Science degrees in clinical laboratory science for students to choose from. Students may choose from the traditional clinical lab science, Ph.D. in clinical science or Masters of Science in transfusion medicine. Programs may be taken on a part-time basis or through distance learning. Several scholarships and work study programs are available through the university for C.L.S. students needing additional financial aid. Assistance is also available to help students study for national exams.

    University of New Mexico

    • The University of New Mexico offers a master’s degree in clinical laboratory science which provides a broad-based curriculum, including concentrated courses and an apprenticeship. Students perform sponsored research projects directed by a research mentor within different laboratory settings and may choose to specialize in research, management or education fields. In addition, students have the choice of conducting their research in over 100 different laboratory facilities specializing in a wide range of services from immunology and cell biology to cancer and toxicology. The program is highly selective, only admitting five students each year into the program.

    Virginia Commonwealth University

    • Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Allied Health Professionals, located in Richmond, Virginia, offers several options for those seeking a graduate program in clinical laboratory sciences. Their fully accredited master’s degree in clinical laboratory science allows students to choose from an advanced track for those with a B.S. in clinical lab sciences and certification, categorical track for students with only a B.S. in biology or chemistry and an accelerated track for students who wish to earn both a B.S. and M.S. at the same time. Students are eligible for C.L.S. generalist certification exams upon completion of these degrees. Several scholarships including hospital sponsored scholarships are available to students who qualify.
