How to Cite Patents

A patent grants exclusive rights for an invention to the inventor. When writing a research paper, or any paper in which you mention a patent, you must cite the patent's source. Various citation styles exist and the manner in which you cite a patent depends on which citation style you use for your paper.

      Cite a patent using the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition format, in the following order: Author's last name, author's first name. Year of patent. Name of patent. Country of patent. Patent number, date of filing (month date, year), and date of issue (month date, year).

      Cite a patent using the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th edition, in the following manner: Author's last name, author's first name. "Name of Patent." Patent number. Date the patent was issued (date month, year).

      Cite a patent using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition, as follows: Author's last name, author's first initial. (Year of patent). Country of patent (in italics). Patent number (in italics). City, state (in which the patent was issued): Issuer of patent. (i.e., the office that issued the patent).
