Look at the Occupational Outlook Handbook. The United States Department of Labor compiles this valuable resource. It outline the nature of the work, type of training needed to get a job in the culinary arts field and the expected salary of a cook, chef or food preparer.
Ask to speak to chefs at restaurants. One way to find a culinary school that meets your career objectives is by asking chefs and cooks. Call or email restaurants that serve the type of cuisine you are interested in, and ask if a chef or cook would be willing to meet with you. Make a list of questions including where they went to school and what their experience was like at the school they chose.
Utilize online resources. There are several online resources to explore when choosing a culinary school. One of these resources is the American Culinary Federation, a non-profit organization that matches students to schools. It lists accredited schools by state and program.
Decide what type of chef you want to be. Many chefs and cooks don't choose what area of culinary arts they want to specialize in until they begin school. However, if you know what area you are interested in--such as pastry decorating or baking--you can choose a school that specializes in that specific area.
Find financial aid. Decide whether or not you will be applying for financial aid. Visit the Resources section for information on financial aid and scholarships.
