How to Transfer to a University With a Certificate

Community and technical colleges often offer academic certificate programs to their students. Academic certificates range in required credits and generally require between a few months to a year to complete. Students may pursue a certificate to learn vocational job skills, complete coursework while deciding on a major or preparing to transfer to a four-year school. Many universities accept credits earned while completing a certificate, allowing you to complete a degree in less time.

Instructions

    • 1

Request an official transcript for all courses completed applied toward your certificate. Transcripts should list all courses, organized by term taken and show total credits per course and grades for each course. Order a copy of a course catalogue as well for future reference.

    • 2

Review information from the college or technical school that awarded the certificate. Look for cooperative agreements between the certifying school and any four-year schools. Some two-year colleges offer transfer certificates, allowing a student to complete general education credits to be applied toward a four-year program.

    • 3

Contact a transfer adviser in the prospective university's transfer department. Send a copy of your transcript for a transfer credit evaluation. Universities have varying transfer policies and may accept your credits differently. The transfer adviser can provide a transfer credit evaluation for you to review before you decide to apply.
