How to Pass an Accounting Course

A student who pursues a business program in a college or university should expect to register for a few accounting classes and maintain an above-average grade point average (GPA) during undergraduate studies. Likewise, a graduate student who pursues a degree in business administration must also maintain an above-average grade point average. Since accounting courses are core or required classes in a college business program, it is essential that students pass accounting courses in order to earn a degree.

Purchase the study guide that corresponds with your accounting textbook. When textbook homework problems are assigned, your study guide will provide additional insight to solving problems and also focus on main ideas or important facts that you need to know in order to successfully complete homework problems and prepare for quizzes and tests. Ask your instructor if there are specific items that you should study in the study guide.

    • 2

Read your textbook before class. For example, if the class will discuss Chapter 2, be sure that you read Chapter 2 at least three or four days before the day of class. Then, skim through the chapter the day before class. This type of preparation will enable you to acquire knowledge that will be needed to enhance your participation in class.

    • 3

Take notes during the class session. If the instructor writes a problem on the chalkboard, be sure to include each step in your notes. Thorough note taking will enable you to solve problems in the textbook with ease. If you miss a day of class, be sure to ask a classmate for notes that were taken that day. This will keep you up-to-date, so that you will not fall behind in your understanding of accounting concepts.

    • 4

Exchange phone numbers with a couple of people in your class. If you take notes during class and still have questions, you can call classmates during your study time to get assistance. In addition, this is a great way to meet new people and establish new friendships. You can even study in a group session together.

Maintain excellent attendance. On the first day of class, when you receive your syllabus, pay attention to the number of days that you are allowed to miss class if any emergencies arise. Do not miss more than the allotted number of classes for emergencies, because an overage can cause an instant failing grade---even if you have maintained a good grade point average in the class.
