What Colleges Offer a PhD in Military History?

Military historians may seek employment as teachers at colleges or universities, educators in military institutes, researchers, lecturers and authors. If you’ve already completed your undergraduate education, consider pursuing a master’s or doctorate degree in military history to bolster your career possibilities. Many universities offer military history programs, including Duke University, the University of North Texas and Ohio State University.
  1. Duke University

    • Duke University offers both an undergraduate and a graduate program in military history in collaboration with UNC (the University of North Carolina). This means that in addition to courses at Duke University, students are free to take courses at UNC to supplement their study. The Duke University graduate program in military history requires students to fulfill four basic requirements: a reading program in the classics, inter-disciplinary reading, colloquia covering American and global military history and a yearlong research seminar that lays the basis for the student’s dissertation. Duke University recommends that prospective students have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.7, as well as proficiency in a foreign language.

    University of North Texas

    • The University of North Texas offers a specialization in military history for a Ph.D. in either American history or European history. The university’s Military History Center and its annual Military History Symposium support this specialization. According to the Department of History, to successfully graduate from this program, students must maintain a GPA of at least 3.5, be proficient in reading a foreign language, pass written and oral exams and write a dissertation. Incoming students should have at least a 3.0 GPA for their undergraduate coursework.

    Ohio State University

    • The military history program at Ohio State University admits both civilians and military officers. Courses range from American military policy to the history of European warfare. Prospective students should communicate with a faculty member with similar interests. That faculty member must be willing to be the applicant’s advisor in order for the applicant to be considered for admission. According to the Department of History, incoming students have an average GPA of a 3.7. OSU strives to provide funding for all graduate students.
