Georgia State Doctoral Programs

Georgia State University is in the metro Atlanta area and home to multiple doctoral degree programs. Upon completion of an undergraduate degree, interested students can go on to pursue a Ph.D. in their field of study. Most doctoral degree programs at Georgia State require students to provide full-time commitment to their studies. With a doctoral degree in biology, business or linguistics, graduates can go on to teach, contribute to research in their field or become leaders in their industry.
  1. Robinson College of Business

    • Georgia State University offers doctoral programs at the J. Mack Robinson School of Business. Students enrolled in any of the programs must provide a full-time commitment and most complete the degree in five years. Graduates of the program will have a high competence of conducting and applying research, as well as university teaching.

      The J. Mack Robinson School of Business provides doctoral programs in accountancy, business process innovation, computer information systems, finance, marketing, real estate, risk management and insurance, strategic management, and organizational behavior/ human resource management.     Department of Biology

    • The Department of Biology at Georgia State offers Ph.D. programs in four main disciplines: applied and environmental microbiology, cellular molecular biology and physiology, molecular genetics and biochemistry, and neurobiology and behavior. After being accepted into the program, students are encouraged to work in the laboratory to find a professor who will serve as their mentor and help them choose the proper curriculum and guide their research. Students in the biology Ph.D. programs receive a stipend that can be supplemented with teaching or research grants.

      A doctoral degree in this department can take anywhere from four to six years to complete. In the first two years of the program, a student is encouraged to complete core coursework and research projects with his mentoring professor. After completing those steps, the student will take a written and oral qualifying exam in his discipline. Finally, the student will complete research on a particular subject and complete a dissertation and present his findings.

    Department of Applied Linguistics and ESL

    • Students can earn a Ph.D. in applied linguistics from the Department of Applied Linguistics and ESL at Georgia State University. Upon completion of the degree, students can conduct research on adult language learning and teaching, as well as train others to teach languages. Students enrolled in the program can apply for financial aid or support, and must have their application completed by January 1 of the applying year.
